POLITICAL IMPACT

One Party Rule, July 1933

On May 2 1933, Hitler passed a law making the Nazi Party the only legal political party, thus making Hitler a legal dictator in charge of a one-party state.

There was then nothing that anyone, even President Hindenburg, could do.

Nazi officials began to take charge of local governments in the individual states.

  • Trade unions were dissolved and their leaders were imprisoned.
  • The SA and SS also dealt brutally with anyone who stepped out of line.
  • By the time the Nazis assumed power, most of their opponents had either been sent to concentration camps or fled Germany.
