3. Hitler’s Germany

FortisLearn July 28, 2020

Germany, defeated in World War I at the end of 1918, plunged into chaos. In the 1920s, Germany recovered temporarily but the Depression caused enormous problems which allowed Hitler and the Nazis to gain power. From 1933 to 1945, Hitler had absolute rule of Germany, resulting in disastrous consequences.

Post-World War I Germany faced serious political and economic difficulties. The Weimar Republic was weak and unable to deal with these conditions. So the German people lost confidence in the Weimar government and many supported Hitler and his party, the National Socialist German Workers Party
(NSDAP), or the Nazis, instead. But it was the crippling Great Depression in the early 1930s which greatly increased support for the Nazis to prevail. Hitler, an astute & cunning politician, was able to use the situation to get the Nazis into government in January 1933. Once in power, he created a dictatorship.
